Verzeichnis mit .htaccess schützen? (Hosteurope)

Hallo zusammen. Ich habe einen VServer bei Hosteruope und möchte einen Ordner mit .htaccess schützen, aber die .htaccess wird gar nicht ausgeführt. was mache ich falsch? De Benutzername ist admin und passwort ist 123456.
